February 14, 2013 to be V-Day’s Largest Day of Action Ever

On February 14, 2013, for 24 hours starting at midnight Pacific Standard Time, Second Life residents will join with activists around the world in a spectacular 24-hour dance event for ONE BILLION RISING, the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.

one-billion-2ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. On February 14, 2013, men and women in Second Life will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and people across the world to Walk, Dance, and Rise as a show of unity, individual strength, and the need for change.

The Second Life event will feature a four-region stage where 200 people can dance together, surrounded by an area of art installations and informational exhibits. A variety of performers will play over the 24-hour period, enabling people all over the world to attend this virtual event no matter their timezone. The regions will have a General maturity rating to allow all residents an opportunity to participate. Pictures are welcome on the event’s Flickr group.

The objective of the event is to raise awareness, not to raise funds; however, information about real-world organisations will be available for those wishing to donate.

One Billion Rising in Second Life is sponsored by: Alchemy Immortalis; Bits and Bobs Animations; Cheeky Pea; The Domineaux Effect; Dutchie; Galland Homes; Garden of Dreams; Gos Boutique; Gwen Carillon Designs/Serenite; Heart Garden Centre; Kaerri; Maven Homes; Meshworx; Prime; Rustica; and Spargel and Shine. In-kind sponsors are: CaLLie CLine; Fruit Islands; Home and Garden Market; KittyCatS!; and Prim Perfect Publications.

About V-Day

V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologues and other artistic works. In 2012, over 5,800 V-Day benefit events took place produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls. To date, the V-Day movement has raised over $90 million and educated millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it, crafted international educational, media and PSA campaigns, reopened shelters, and funded over 14,000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses in Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Kenya, South Dakota, Egypt and Iraq. Over 300 million people have seen a V-Day benefit event in their community.

  1. Although most everyone I’ve seen so far has praised and embraced this initiative, there are always the ones who will try to denigrate it, due to the fact that they are misogynists.

And yes, here we must do a little “name and shame”. I’m talking about Pserendipity Daniels and his buddies (with first among them, a bloke named Storm Clarence).

According to Pserendipity Daniels and his logic, this initiative “condones violence against men”, calls for allocating “scarce resources” to an “inappropriate area of concern” (yes, trying to put an end to gender-based violence is not an” appropriate area of concern” according to Pserendipity Daniels and his goons), is based on cooked statistics (i.e. the statistics about women having been victimized by men have been fraudulently increased to defraud people into feeling sorry for women) and, of course, violence against women is “fictitious drama”, because “more men are victims of violence than women”. Oh, and this initiative is promoted by “feminazis”. Oh, and women who don’t like rape and gender-based violence are “hysterical”.

He has spammed several feeds with his inanities and his trolling. This person is a true sociopath that, along with his friends (Storm Clarence, Auryn Beorn and Venus Petrov), needs to be isolated and marginalized by every person that has dignity.

If you see him and his friends anywhere, block/mute them. And keep them banned from your land to avoid his drama. Pserendipity Daniels is a prime example of a “man” whose mind is full of the prevailing rape culture.

  2. As you saw from my comments yesterday, I’m no fan of Pep and his goon squad to say the least. I could have predicted this would happen, not only because I’ve seen this same act before when the issue of violence against women came up on SLF, but also because the MySL feeds is the current favored playground for that group of griefers. They have free run there and know it. They have violated ToS repeatedly and despite flurries of AR’s against them have never been disciplined in any way.

That being said, I hope you can stay focused on the original cause. This is something that to me is the very essence of our problems worldwide. And the U.S. is currently leading the charge with it’s machismo fueled attitude, a direct result of ten years of war-mongering and bully like tactics disguised as foreign policy. We’ve been growing soldiers and worshiping sports stars for far too long. It has affected our psyche and it needs to be checked. You don’t need to go any further than Twitter’s @EveryDaySexism account to see the devastating effect this has had on the male attitude in today’s society.

I could say a lot more, I’m pro-women to a fault. For now I’ll just thank you and all the courageous women who have forwarded this cause. You shouldn’t have to step over the landmines of trolls to get your message out there, but as you so rightly pointed out, those individuals are part and parcel of the problem. Seeing them show their true colors right away can be valuable, those are the people who will never change and aren’t worth the energy of trying.

    Thank you.
